I don't know about you, but I've had quite a week. Between work, school, visiting relatives, and house projects, I've found myself needing some "r & r" even if time doesn't exactly allow for it. Nothing like a nice soak in the tub, accompanied by some old tunes, a good book or magazine and maybe a glass of wine. It's amazing what even 15-20 minutes in there will do. So grab your favorite bubble bath and go for a soak. Until then, enjoy these lovely pics! Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! :)

The Dining Room.....

Black and tan. This color combination has become one my favorites. They were our wedding colors back in early 2008 and the colors I used to decorate my desk the same year. The colors remind me of vintage romance, both warmth and mystery. I really wanted to incorporate them into the house, but didn't know what room.... till I stepped into the dining room at our new house late last year. So while we've been working on other rooms, I've slowly been bringing home the black and tan decor from work and searching for coordinating dining room furniture. So far, the only thing we have is a lovely black wine rack. We did find a dining room table, but it's currently awaiting a coat of black paint outside. The tan paint sits in the dining room as well, but I am reminded that before my husband and I know it, the room will be complete :)

Here's some of the inspiration pictures I've collected over the years.

This scan is from, I believe the Romantic Homes 'Romantic Bedrooms and Baths' from two years ago. The tan looks a little more golden here than it does in real life.

Our windows look something like this. We're looking at getting some toile valances for them. The table will be placed like the one above.

This wall color is probably the closest to the one we chose, which is Olympic's Earthy Ocher.

Hoping to find a buffet like this as well as a china cabinet.

We have a few of the patterned boxes on top that we plan to use for storage inside the linen/dish closet. I love how they organized the above closet.

Country Kitchen......

Well it's been a long time, but the kitchen has found new life. While there are still a few more projects still to do (ex. re-grout the floor, put white decorative faux tin ceiling tiles on the ceiling) we're happy to have at least the painting done.

Here's the Before.....

And here's the AFTER..... (WARNING it's a lot of color, but that's what we wanted for this room)

The wall color is "Safari Tan" by Ralph Lauren, which sadly they don't carry at Home Depot anymore. The kitchen at our last house was this color and I painted my mom's kitchen the same color a few years before that, so you could say I really like this color. The "barn red" is a mixture of leftover paints I had from Lowes and Home Depot. The sink, shelf and an old cabinet (not shown) were painted the "barn red" (the shelf and sink were two different shades of red prior to that). The window has a lace bubble shade, but it's pretty bright so I don't think you can see it in this picture. We'd like to get some more decor for above the cabinets, hence the bare spot in the picture.

A valance was used on the shelf to hide a plethora of cookbooks.

You can see a sneak peak of the laundry room in the back. That is the next room on the list and it's almost done as well.

Love this bread box.

Only started collecting aprons this year. Can't wait to add more. The red, beige and blue one is actually my great-grandmother's bonnet.

We're still looking for more vintage spice tins. We hope to fill the whole thing up :)

Wine rack was a $2 thrift store find. Most things in the kitchen are thrift store finds actually.

Each room in the house seems to have a black cat in it. Inspired by our little kitty, Boo.

These "prints" are taken from a book that was illustrated by the wonderful Tasha Tudor. They are too cute!

"The cat and his housekeeping staff live here." So true! Lol!!!!

My mom had these when I was little. Found these on Ebay and they are very practical as well.

Happy Show and Tell Friday! Last Sunday my mom surprised me during a visit by pulling out some old boxes. Little did I know that inside was a beautiful hot chocolate set that was my great grandmother's and that my mom was giving it to me! I don't know how old it is. It only says 'Made in Germany' on the bottom, but I am enchanted. I love the colors and the gold on the handles. So beautiful! So, thanks mom! You are amazing!!!!

Happy 2010!! Hope everyone is having a wonderful new year!!! Well, here we are at the new Rose Cottage. Still unpacking, but ready to begin some projects to make the house our own. Project #1 is the downstairs guest bath. Here's a peak in.......

It's L shaped, with the shower in a little cove in the corner. The baby blue is being replaced by a soft lavender. And then we're using bronze accents. You can see the bronze hardware in the photo above. That little white cabinet is going to get a makeover as well. Rugs, a valance,.... the whole sha-bang. We hope to be done within a week so check back.

The local museum's Christmas display featured some lovely old fashioned ornaments that made my heart beat a little faster. They are so amazing! Intricate works of art featuring ribbon, sequins and jewels. I took some pictures through the glass so I could share them. Hope everyone had a great day!

The above wreath is special to me. It started as a simple Christmas project a few years ago that turned out to be something I had up the rest of that year. When I made this I was going through some trials, but it doesn't remind me so much of the trials, but the beauty that came after; that the winters in life only last a season. Better days are ahead! A favorite holiday memory.....

As far back as I can remember the holidays I remember popping in the White Christmas VHS tape. For our family that movie was something we'd watch to help us usher in the Christmas spirit. I can remember dancing around the living room when I was little singing the 'Sisters' number. And the ending was just beautiful with everyone on stage singing White Christmas as it snowed in the back.

As I got older I appreciated the talent of all the movie's stars and the wonderful story it had to tell about paying tribute to those in the military.

We finally bought it on DVD last year and am excited to pass along this tradition to our kids.

Old Hollywood bathroom......

I was packing up the bathroom and dividing the decor between master bath and guest bath and it hit me. The master bath decor was very old Hollywood. A mirrored candle holder, elegant containers, vintage perfume bottles, etc. Hmmm.... and then I started thinking.... What about an old Hollywood inspired master bath featuring white and mirrored accents, cushy rugs, vintage furniture and silk like draperies? Couldn't stop thinking about it after that. It's gonna take some prepwork, but I can't wait to make it come true. Until then I can feast on these gems from the web.

I know, it's not even Halloween, but since we'll be moving soon, we won't be decorating for fall. So my attention has turned to Christmas. In honor of Pink Saturday I wanted to pose a question....

What would you do if you had a pink Christmas tree?

Rose Cottage is MOVING!!!......

So we've been looking for what feels like forever and had made an offer on a lovely foreclosed 1909 Victorian farmhouse not as a joke, but never thinking we had a chance. We had always admired the house and it's one of the most preserved historical homes in town. It was a redone as a Bed and Breakfast about two years ago, so many of the major things have been updated. A couple weeks later after making our first offer our Realtor let us know we were in the top three, but the bank wanted to change the funding. So we submitted another offer, praying we'd have a chance. Well, God is more than good!!! Got word it's sale pending for us and we signed papers Saturday! :) The first order of business is redoing the front yard.

I found some pictures of when it was a bed and breakfast.... so lovely! I know the former owner and she put a lot into the house. We hope to bring it back to its former glory and then some.

So,....... we haven't found a house yet and are not expecting an addition anytime soon, but I wanted to share a gorgeous find. I Googled something and discovered Bella Notte's Melissa collection. While I would have to sell an organ or two to afford some of the pieces, I thought one day I'd like to use something like this in a little girl's room. The fabric is so beautiful and comes in many different colors. If you do have the funds and want to splurge here is one store that carries it: Layla Grayce.

When life gives you lemons.....

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Great advice, especially after your mom gives you ten actual lemons from her tree. I found a recipe in the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook and it turned out pretty yummy. If it's too "country-time" you can use a strainer. Enjoy!!!

Lemonade or Limeade base
2 1/2 cups water
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon finely shredded lemon or lime peel
1 1/4 cups lemon or lime juice
Ice cubes

1. For a lemonade or limeade base, in a medium saucepan heat and stir water and sugar over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat; cool 20 minutes. Add citrus peel and juice to sugar mixture. Pour into a jar; cover and chill up to three days.
2. For each glass of lemonade, combine equal parts base and water in ice-filled glasses; stir.

Strawberry-Lemonade Slush
For each serving, in a blender container combine 1/2 cup fresh or frozen unsweetened strawberries, 1/3 cup lemonade base and 1 tablespoon sugar. Blend until smooth. With blender running, add 1/2 cup ice cubes, one at a time through opening in lid until beverage is slushy.

Daily temps here have lingered around 100 degrees lately, so there's nothing to do except curl up with a book and crank the a/c. I just ordered the book below from the local bookstore and can't wait to see the all the cottages.

The book below was on my reading list last year and I still love to look through it. It's just pictures, but it's the kind of picture book grownups can enjoy. Check it out if you see it at your local bookstore.

My husband and I passed by this junk store about two weeks ago and something outside caught my eye, it was an old vanity. I made a comment that I thought it was cute and didn't think much of it after that. The next day I found myself thinking about it again and thought, during a work break I should run over there and take a look, if it's even still there. It was. So I asked the price, $20, sold. I'd seen others like this in antique places for way more and had been wanting one for years. Took it home, sanded it, paint, new knobs and presto.... the new vanity. It's amazing where you find some treasures. Happy Friday!!!!!

The Exeter Chamber of Commerce is holding their annual Garden Walk this Saturday. It will feature seven lovely local gardens. I was able to go early to do the preview for the paper and get a sneak peak at the gardens. I will be posting the gardens in the next few posts. The garden below is Russell and Carol Brandt's. This was our grand prize raffle, a pink wheelbarrow that had sweet peas painted on it filled with goodies.

Another one of the raffle gifts. Each member donates a gift. We had everything from lovely bird baths to handpainted wagons with annuals in them.

Garden Club Spring Event.....

The Exeter Garden Club held their Annual Spring Event last Saturday. It's our one and only fundraiser with tea, lunch, a guest speaker and mega raffle. It was beautiful. Here are some of the tables. The very last one is mine. Our theme was "Enchanting Sweet Peas." You can see sweet peas in almost all the arrangements. Click on a picture to see the enlarged image. The sweet peas are in full bloom here and boy, do they smell good! I planted intervals of seeds and have since learned that I have more sweet peas than I can cut each day. It's no wonder the English call sweet peas the "Queen of Annuals."

There's a a home we've been eyeing that's caught our attention. I don't have pictures yet, but it looks similar to the houses above. We're praying for a miracle basically, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. I tend to be pretty pessimistic, but good things do still happen. Faith is best exercised against the impossible.

I wouldn't say I'm one for crazy color, but an artist named Kim Parker has caught my eye. Her lovely florals are a bit whimsical, but oh so cute! You can see her stuff everywhere now, including Target. Her creations are perfect for spring and summer. And I bet they would look great in a little girl's room. What do you think?

The Old Monterey Inn.....

We stayed at the Old Monterey Inn for our anniversary. It was amazing! Not only did they upgrade us to the nicest lil room, but the inn is just so romantic. Click the picture below to visit their website. Oh, and check TripAdvisor. They always get great reviews. It's no surprise why.

The Inn was a lovely Tudor house built in the 1920s that was later converted to a B & B. It's sprawling gardens and proximity to downtown Monterey add to the Inn's charm.

Guests can eat in the formal dining room, the gardens or in your room by the fireplace.

They really go the extra mile. There's always goodies available from sherry and cookies to a wine and cheese reception from 5-7 in the parlor.

We strolled around the gardens after checking into our room.

We stayed in the Garden Cottage. It had a two person jetted tub, which was absolutely lovely! And they give you great lavender soaps. Love the mural!

The inn features large feather beds, which accounted for a great night of sleep. They give you a robe and slippers too. Next to the bed was a window seat where you could sit and look down into the gardens.

Carmel's storybook cottages....

There is something magical about cottages. Roaming the streets of Carmel we were in awe of the amount of cute storybook inspired cottages. We had wanted to find the Hansel and Gretel house, but too many streets and not enough daylight, not to mention a hungry hubby. Here are a few I snapped. We would love to live in any one of these. If only we had a spare couple million lying around.

Thanks to everyone for the house hunting well-wishes. We're still looking and praying for the right thing. We know it'll happen soon.

My husband and I just returned from Carmel/Monterey for our anniversary. Carmel is full of lovely cottages and gardens. I'll try to post pictures Friday.

The Exeter Garden Club's Spring Event (tea) is next month, so I've been running around trying to prepare. Our theme is 'Enchanted Sweet Peas.' It'll be a lovely tea with plenty of gift items up for raffle.

It's so nice to see the signs of Spring. Seeing bulbs emerge and the roses come back from pruning after a long winter is encouraging in a way. With the economy how it is, it feels like it's been a long winter, but I am reminded that 'to everything there is a season.' The current hard times are temporary, even though they may feel permanent. The promise of spring is just around the corner.

There used to be first time home buyers programs, but with California's budget woes, they no longer exist. The Color Pink

Cotton Candy and Little Girls: Pink is a softer, less violent red. Pink is the sweet side of red. It's cotton candy and bubble gum and babies, especially little girls.

Nature of Pink: While red stirs up passion and action, studies have shown that large amounts of pink can create physical weakness in people. Perhaps there is a tie-in between this physical reaction and the color's association with the so-called weaker sex.

Whether your yard is mostly sunny or shady you can still have a pink garden. I found a binder of garden ideas my mother in law gave me that had some suggestions. Here they are:

*Bulbs- Bearded Iris 'Beverly Sills' (coral summer flowers, 3 ft; zones 3-9) and Tulip 'Big Chief' (rich pink spring blooms, 2 ft; zones 3-8)
*Shrubs-Tree Peony (pink spring and summer blooms, 7 ft; zones 4-8), Camellia 'Inspiration' (pink blooms from fall to spring, 12 ft; zones 7-9) and Spirea 'Little Princess' (small, rose-pink summer flowers, 1-2 ft; zones 4-9).
*Annuals- English Daisies (double pink or white summer flowers, 6 inches; all zones)
*Perennials- Baby's Breath 'Pink Fairy' (clouds of pink flowers, 2 ft; zones 3-9 and Phlox 'Brigadier' (deep pink summer flowers, 4 ft; zones 4-8).

And then there are roses. Pink roses are in abundance from hybrid to ground covers. Visit Jackson and Perkins to view their selection. The Kimberlina Floribunda Rose was named the winner of Floribunda Rose of Year for 2009.

I know I only mentioned a handful of flowers, but I'm sure a trip to the garden center or through a seed catalog will encourage your dreams of a pink garden to grow.

The living room has seemed a little sparse since I took down all the Christmas decor. So I thought I'd add some greenery. I love this Ivy Cottage wreath from the Victorian Trading Co. but it costs $59.95. Yow-za!
So I thought I'd try to recreate this wreath. I have my Michael's and Jo-ann coupons ready. We'll see how it goes.

My husband and I are talking about buying our first home. With prices so slow and so many nice houses available, it's a great time. So we're taking it slow and making our wish list. I am wishing for sweet, maybe white cottage, with great soil to spare and a location to please. There is a neighborhood in Visalia (a town near here) that is wonderful. Kinda pricey, but with the market how it is, you never know. It's filled with amazing cottages and large trees. But until we're ready, I'm going to dream.... with the help pictures like these. I've enjoyed looking at everyone's Nativity scenes. So peaceful. The one below is from my mother in law. It's by Thomas Kinkade so I love having pink little flowers around the manger and such. But I am reminded that the real nativity scene was probably not so beautiful and probably smelled... well, like a barn.

No matter what your Christmas looks like this year, even if it appears like everything that can go wrong has, remember the first Christmas. If I was in Mary's shoes, I would have been stressed and oh so cranky. How quick I would forget God's blessings. A census....really?! Who wants to travel a long ways on a donkey when you are majorly prego?! Not me. No room at the inn?! You've got to be kidding me! A barn?! I guess I don't have a choice! (My cue to pout)
But wow, when it seemed everything that could go wrong, did........... in reality everything went right and oh, what a holy night it was.

So if you're Christmas is far from Merry remember that it doesn't mean it's not perfect in God's eyes.

A Romantic New Year.....

Can you believe that Christmas is only days away?! Goodness, where did time go?! I've been running around like a mad woman baking, candy making, crafting and shopping so much that I forgot to make any plans for the New Year.
But I was inspired today. I found the newest Romantic Country magazine at the grocery store earlier. Oh my!!! My favorite feature was Patty Fernadez's garden. Amazing! Oh and I loved Fifi's article on seed catalogs. I think the gardener in me is wishing it was not so frosty outside. :(

I learned that a local artist was asked to paint an ornament to represent California's 21st Congressional District that now hangs on a tree in the White House. Her name is Varian Mace and she is awesome. She specializes in painting flowers, especially poppies. I went to the White House Christmas website and found her ornament as well as others that are great!

I just wanted to take a second and thank my mom. Besides being the most amazing woman I know, she is so incredibly thoughtful. I was treated the other day to a wonderful surprise when I came over to visit. She had made me a sweet snow covered birdhouse. So cute and it will go perfect in the bedroom where I have been decorating with silver and white for Christmas. So thanks again mom!

The Exeter Mercantile Co. has been in business more than 100 years. It's wooden floors still creak and they still carrying items they carried more than 50 years ago. In addition to a hardware store the second half is now a gift emporium that specializes in the best in kitchen supplies, fine china and linens. At Christmastime they have the best decorations. I went in and snapped a few shots at the Downtown Holiday Open House last night. Click on any image to get a closer look.

Deck the Halls.....

Tonight the Exeter Garden Club had its annual Christmas shindig (probably not the right word, but oh well). It was lovely. About six of us made tons of appetizers and desserts. Yum! It was lovely to see our Christmas tree decorated. We put it up at the Exeter Veteran's Memorial Building for the season. It was the first real Christmas event I've been to this year, but it was a nice way to start off the week of holiday events.

Thursday is Downtown Exeter's Holiday Open House where businesses stay open late and pass out appetizers to thousands of people. There's carolers, hot chocolate, carraige rides and of course Santa Claus. It's like a Norman Rockwell painting come to life. Friday is the Christmas parade downtown. And then there is Saturday. I have to cover the Guild Breakfast in Lindsay which is fabulous cause of all the eleboratly decorated tables, then on to some Holiday bazaars and craft fairs. I'll post pictures after I return home.

By the Water Tower Antiques is one of my favorite places in Exeter to visit. At Christmastime they turn their already cute shop into a winter wonderland with over 60 decorated trees. I took a walk around the block earlier today just to catch a glimpse of the marvelous fall foliage. It's often easy to miss here in the valley. And while it may lack when compared to some of the east coast, I am thankful for the the lovely fall rainbow I do get to see. It was a nice way to start the Thanksgiving week. A Spot of Tea.....

My mom and I browsed a local shop called 'When Pigs Fly' this morning, which is located in a storybook house that I am in love with. I admit, if I could, I would love to open a shop there someday. *Sigh* Anyway, I found a lovely tea cup and saucer (the big one above) and gladly took it home. It reminded me that the Exeter Garden Club Spring tea is coming up in April and I should refresh my tea knowledge. So, I thought I'd share some tidbits.

*All teas should be brewed to taste. Most blends should be steeped for at least 3 minutes but no longer than 5.

*To keep tea hot longer, warm the pot with very hot water, then empty out before brewing the tea.

*Christmas Teas are typically flavored with warm spices including tangy lemon peels, fruity orange peels, cinnamon and cloves. These warm and spicy teas are best enjoyed without milk, although adding honey can enhance the taste.

The following is from www.teaism.com:

*Freshness is essential. Tea's enemies are light, heat, strong odors, and moisture. For the best tea, buy smaller quantities more often. Store tea in a tight-sealing, opaque container. Green teas can be refrigerated.

*Use fresh filtered or bottled water. While your kettle heats, warm your teapot and cups with hot water. Water temperature is important. Use boiling water (212° F) for black teas and water at 180°-195° F for oolongs. White and green teas are delicate and are best made with water at 170°-180° F.

*Measure the quantity of tea by weight rather than volume. This is more accurate Because of the differences among tea leaves, Use 4-5 grams of tea to 8 ounces of water. Without a scale, you'll have to experiment a little until you get the "feel." Look at the leaf - if it is small and dense (like most blacks and greens) use a level teaspoon; if it is large and wiry (like oolongs and whites) use two teaspoons. Measure tea directly into the pot or a roomy infuser.

*Brewing time varies according to tea type. Generally, the smaller the leaf, the shorter the brewing time. Try steeping green teas 3-5 minutes, black teas 3-4 minutes, white teas 5 minutes and oolongs 6-7 minutes. Swirl the pot before pouring. Pour off the tea or remove the leaves to prevent oversteeping and bitterness

Ummm....here.

Yes sadly througouth this long drought of blogging I have been here, at work or at home, through election coverage and preparing for the numerous special holiday publications the paper likes to put out.
Halloween flew by. I was Snow White, because I ate too much candy prior to Halloween to fit into my Marie Antoinette costume. Though ironically I had an allergic reaction to a very tart apple and my mouth became swollen Halloween morning. Snow White eating a bad apple, it was very ironic. And they were Disney apples too. Hmmm....

A few days before Halloween a small black kitten decided to follow me home. She approved of our home and decided that she would live here too. We named her Boo! She is full of spirit and such a cuddlebug. Snoop has gotten use to her and Joey is enamored. I will soon have to break it to him that she's not interested.

I am already in the Christmas spirit. I started decorating in the bedroom and will hopefully post pictures sometime this weekend. I love the holiday season. Thanksgiving is my favorite, but this year I think I will enjoy Christmas more than ever.

I hope everyone is well and not stressing too much already about the holidays. I can't wait to see all the lovely holiday posts.

Twice as Nice.....

First off, I'm sorry I'm neglecting my posts and behind on so many things. I will catch up. It's been a chore to find time to relax lately, but once in a while I take a deep breathe and appreciate the lull.
I took a long lunch today and ventured to Good Goods with my mom and sister. It's amazing! I picked up some faux miniature pink roses in a pot, lavender sprigs, the new issue of Romantic Homes and some Halloween decor for only $18 total. Not too shabby.

Thousands of visitors a year fill the makeshift parking lot in between two Victorian homes, a large barn and a garden shed on the outskirts of Farmersville. Not bad for a business that doesn’t have a sign out front, a website and relies primarily on word of mouth from other local shops and customers. But once you step inside one of the three buildings that make up Good Goods, you get it; this is not your average antique shop.

A lovely Victorian house stands filled with antique treasures and nostalgic elements from years past. Holiday items are stung everywhere as the sounds of Bing Crosby singing sweet holiday melodies fill the air. A large barn has everything you can imagine to grow your garden and turn your house into a home. And the ‘garden shed’ brings shabby chic to a new level with its beautiful décor and white furniture. The essence of old fashioned living and beauty can be seen in every room. Even the price tags are still hand printed and your purchases will mostly likely be rung up by one of the owners.

Owners Jim and Sandy Hall are no strangers to the antique and specialty gift business. They’ve been involved in some, way, shape or form for over 37 years. They came from southern California to the area 34 years ago building their business, literally from the ground up. Every building including their home has been relocated and restored over the years.

A big vintage barn, a three story tank house and a bunk house are now filled with antiques, white furniture, industrial furniture, gorgeous flower arrangements, holiday gift items and garden décor.

The 4,000 square foot barn, originally from Goshen was disassembled piece by piece and moved 10 miles to its present location. The barn itself is rather unique as it is one of the few barns in California with the original advertising on the side.

The large Victorian house was moved from Ivanhoe and was owned by local pioneer, John Chatton.

Good Goods officially opened for business 15 years ago. And has become a local favorite ever since.

“We have a number of people in Exeter who have our flyers and direct people here,” said Sandy.

They have also received the attention of non-locals as well. The shop has been featured in such publications as Romantic Homes and Sunset Magazine. And is no stranger to visitors from all over the county who heard about Good Goods by word of mouth, on the internet or with the help of a flyer..

Looking for a unique holiday gift or more décor to deck the halls with? Good Goods is the place to find it. And while Good Goods may seem like a labor of love for Sandy and Jim, that’s only because, it is.

“I think I’m really blessed. Sometimes I take all of this for granted, but then I sit for a moment and remember how much I love old things,” said Sandy.

Good Goods is open daily from 12- 5 p.m. except for major holidays. From Exeter, California take Hwy 65 to Highway 198. Turn right on Road 182 and travel north to Avenue 304. Turn left (west) to go to Road 168. Turn right. Look for a purple and cream Victorian home on your right with the address 30924 Road 168.

Wow, it's been awhile. Work has been crazy. My Editor is on vacation this week so the paper has been left in the Sports Editor's and my lap. Yikes. But other than that, hopefully I'll be on more next week.

I did pick up the cutest little shelf this week. It has hand painted roses and a blue bird on it. The antiques shop owner called it a rickety little thing, but I said, "it's okay, that's why they call it Shabby Chic. " He looked at me like I was crazy. Oh well.

Alright, I'm pretty much done with my desk makeover. I only changed a few things, but sitting there today, I felt so much more comfortable. A little bit goes a long way. I'll add to it as time passes, but I'm pleased. I only spent about about $15 and most of that went to the rug. I reworked the bulletin board, made a pillow out of the remaining fabric, tea stained some doilies, made the little motivational sign above the bulletin board and brought a bunch of stuff I had stored at my mom's house. The desk chair was sitting in my room at my mom's house. So much better than the squeaky gray chair from before. I am was not allowed to put any holes in the walls or paint the desk, but that's okay. It's definitely a start!

My Desk Needs a Makeover!!!....

Yikes! My desk at its worse!

I took a short break from working late last night only to step away from my desk and realize that it is in desperate need of a makeover. It's not usually this messy (this is my desk after trying to frantically hurry and finish my stories and pages early so I can take Monday off), but it still lacks any charm.
I was thinking a floor rug, a new chair, less clutter (of course), a small lamp and some romantic touches.
My mom decorated her office in Shabby Chic style and it has become not only an oasis for her, but her coworkers love to visit to de-stress.
I'd love to make my work environment a little nicer. Payday is not until Tuesday, but I decided this weekend this would be my project anyway. I'll try to use things I already have and not spend any money. Sounds like Mission Impossible, but I'm up for the task.
If anybody has any suggestions, please share!
I'll post pictures after I'm finished.

Hope wherever you are that the weather is pleasant. And even if it's not, you can celebrate that fall is just around the corner with a nice cool beverage.

Old Fashioned Lemonade
From Parade
4 cups fresh lemon juice (about 24 lemons), strained
8 cups water
1 cup sugar
Ice, for serving
3 lemons, thinly sliced, for serving
Pour the strained lemon juice into a large container. Add water and sugar, then stir until the sugar dissolves. Pack in an insulated drink cooler or Thermos. Serve the lemonade in glasses over ice garnished with a lemon slice. Makes 3 quarts without ice.

The Green Lantern
From Gourmet
1 cup packed parsley sprigs
1/2 teaspoon grated lime zest
1 cup cold water
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
1/2 cup sugar
1 (10-ounce) bottle club soda
Purée all ingredients except club soda in a blender 1 minute. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a large glass measure. Serve over ice and top off drinks with club soda.

A local eatery Monet's has the best tasting water. I asked what their secret was and they told me that put slices of cucumbers and/or melon balls in their water to make it taste "fresh." It definitely works!

As I rest in the cottage away from the 103 degree temps. outside, I find myself dreaming of fall. I can't wait! While I love the colors of fall, I also love incorporating sweet pastels and gentle florals into fall decor. My husband and I have decided to turn the spare room into a guest room. So I though I'd browse the net for some inspiration.
We're going for an eclectic English country feel. Something not too feminine or masculine. We want to offer the room to traveling missionaries who visit our church. We don't have the nicest place, have only a twin bed for the room and they wouldn't have their own bathroom, but even if we don't have much, we still can offer something. Currently it's painted a baby blue, which I like, though I'm thinking about adding a periwinkle glaze over it. Hmmm.... oak pieces, soft lighting and comfy linens. Let's see what else I can find....

It's the comforter, which I think is a Waverly one at Target that caught my eye. I can imagine waking up to the smell of a yummy breakfast in this bed.

On Sunday my husband and I decided to checkout the new thrift store in Visalia. It's called Rescued Treasures. Proceeds go to the Visalia Rescue Mission which has been reaching out to the local homeless population since 1981.
I was amazed at all the great stuff they had! I picked up a small battery operated cottage clock, a Anne Hathaway Cottage toffee tin and a lovely silver tray, which still needs a second round of polish, but I am in love with it's shape. All this, a shirt and a great pair of designer jeans for under $20. I love thrifting.... (sigh)
I'm hoping to go back again sometime this week. I saw some large glass decanters that would go great on the bathroom shelf.

Work has been crazy this last week, but to my pleasant surprise I received a very special package Saturday afternoon. Mo (not me) from Mo's Cottage made and sent me a beautiful scented talcum powder shaker. She is so talented! So to Mo, thank you so very much! You are such a sweet lady! I love it! And hopefully your new banner will be finished before too long. I have run into a creative dead-end, but hopefully I'll find some inspiration browsing Flicker. Thank you again!

Fall is right around the corner and since it has a tendency to sneak up on me I decided to plan my Halloween costume early.
Halloween isn't my favorite holiday, but I love dressing up. And this is my excuse.
This year I decided to go as kind of modern Marie Antoinette. I say "modern" so no corset and long gown to trip over around the office.
I'm going to braid my hair in little braids and when I take them out, "poof!".... literally, it will be a giant poof (my hair has a lot of volume). Then I'll arrange it atop my head , stick in some feathers and flowers clips and it's done. Easy and so fun!
Is anyone else dressing up? I'd love to hear costume ideas!

Kudos to Cindy at My Romantic Home who thought of sharing everyone's favorite things.
Here is mine...

...dancing bear candlesticks from the Victorian Trading Company. I purchased them just before my husband and I were married. They are based on the famous painting by William Holbrook Beard who was known for his caricatures and for humorously anthropomorphized animals. The bears are so whimsical and remind me not to take life too seriously. Thanks again to Cindy!

Herbs and More....

I was fortunate enough to be assigned to do an article on a business called Herbs and More this past week. This small business makes wonderful goodies for bath and body. They also grow and dry the various herbs used in their products. But that is not the best part about this business; it is an adult day program meaning they employ developmentally disabled adults. Employees work for limited hours in a fun environment and get paid all under the supervision of caring staff who also run enrichment classes such as art. Here is a link to the article online.

Did anyone else have summer reading lists when they when younger? For some reason I still get excited and "assign" myself books to read during the summer. This summer I downloaded a few from itunes due to the fact that I would be having surgery and would not be able to read for awhile. I downloaded French Women Don't Get Fat by Mireille Guiliano, Ten Lessons to Transform Your Marriage by John M. Gottman, Julie Schwartz Gottman and Joan DeClaire and Everyday Deserves a Chance by Max Lucado. Thanks itunes!

So lately I've been trying my hand at web graphics. While I have no idea how to make blog templates, I hope to one day get to that point. Till then, I will start with the simple stuff. I made some headers that anyone should feel free to use. Just click on the image you like and another window will open with the header full size. Save it to your computer, open it up in a design program (Photoshop, Fireworks, etc.) and add your own text. If using Blogger choose the "shrink to fit" option when uploading.
Enjoy and have fun! Hopefully I'll have more freebies on the way.
